I contributed "174 Fire Drawings" to the Lesser Heat Festival at Lijiang Studio. As an interactive installation, each visitor had the opportunity to take a brush drawing in exchange for a contribution of their own. I wanted to create an exercise of ignition or spark, recognizing that I was learning how it felt to release artwork with no real expectation of return. Due to my absence, my amazing fellow artists created the final installation, composing the arrangement of the greeting altar (i.e. my makeshift loom with weavings) and securing the drawings with courtyard stones. I received memorized poems, portraits, landscapes, symbols, abstract designs, words of encouragement, and other renditions of fire. I left instructions that the loom could be disassembled and returned to its original purpose – as firewood.
Many thanks to Frog Wing, Jay Brown, The He Family, Fine Fine Small Mountain, Jennifer Torrence, Crystal Pascucci, He Xiu Dong, and all of the artists from the festival! (http://www.lijiangstudio.org/lesserheatfestival/)
