spun earth - - provided by lì lì (莉莉)

an ongoing exploration of toroidal expression and physicalized potential in 3D

Spun earth is a reference to how materials that are intellectually dissociated from fibers and textiles weave. In the creation process, no matter the perceived medium, we revolve the phenomenon of manifestation past the point of contact of our consciousness. The 'fabric of the universe' is dynamic and unfixed, spontaneously magnetic in its cohesion. No thing remains in stasis.  All things flow according to nature along a continuously defined route.

Everything in this universe behaves, constantly. We, the perceived I/we, are motile between perception and all supposedly exterior behavior. We weave at the cross-section of the seer and the seen.

For me, physical action means earth. Working or practicing anything that leads to evolving the mind-body is an earth practice. Additionally, in my experience, two forms of craft resonate with spinning earth. They are drawing and wheel throwing.

In drawing, a gesture is a motif, which has musicality. It can repeat. It can be used a as module to create structural narrative. The gesture itself evolves with spontaneity. In a sequence of drawings, no gesture is the same. So, it is inside the moment.

Patterns point beyond themselves and expand infinitely. Patterns translate to a field of vision. Thinking of and designing my drawings in fields brings them to a space that is less easily fetishized by the mind. On a certain level of perception, patterns divert symbolic or linguistic categorization. Patterns allow us to acknowledge the energetic footprint of a motif...seeing beyond language and possibly beyond sight and codified systems of perception. In this sense, repetition can lead to synesthetic potential.

If the body is able to guide the motion of perception instead of the mind, what then are the possibilities for experience? The mind can lead an experience. It can accept, reject, project, attach, and give reasons. But, the body can also lead with intelligence of its own...
